PORTS OF CALL

New York, New York

The sight of massive cruise ships docked along the Hudson River is often a surprise for visitors who don't realize how many people head out to sea from New York City. A few cruise lines now base Caribbean-bound ships here year-round, though most of the market is made up of ships doing seasonal cruises to New England and Bermuda. If you're coming to the city from the immediate area, you can easily arrive the day before and do a bit of sightseeing before you embark. It's easy, as the main cruise ship port is fairly close to Times Square and lots of other attractions in Midtown.

Some cruise ships embark at Cape Liberty Terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey, or at a new cruise-ship terminal in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Neither of these ports is terribly convenient to public transportation, so you would be well advised to avail yourself of transportation offered by your cruise line.

Boston, Massachusetts

New England's largest and most important city -- Boston -- was the cradle of American independence. The city's most famous buildings are not merely civic landmarks but national icons, and its local heroes are known to the nation: John and Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, John Hancock, and many more who live at the crossroads of history and myth. At the same time, Boston is a contemporary center of high finance and high technology, a place of granite and glass towers rising along what once were rutted village lanes. Its many students, artists, academics, and young professionals have made the town a haven for the arts, international cinema, late-night bookstores, ethnic food, alternative music, and unconventional politics. Best of all, Boston is meant for walking. Most of its historical and architectural attractions are in neighborhoods that are easy to explore on foot. Should you need to make short or long hops between neighborhoods, the "T" -- the easy-to-ride public transit system -- covers the city.

Portland, Maine

When its residents refused to surrender arms, the British burned this bustling port town in 1775. Much of Portland was again destroyed in the Great Fire of 1866, when a boy celebrating Independence Day threw a firecracker into a pile of wood shavings. Urban decay was the most recent threat, but a successful campaign to restore the downtown area has changed all that. Portland's beautifully restored Old Port balances modern commercial enterprise and salty waterfront character in an area bustling with restaurants, shops, and galleries. Tours of the harbor and excursions to islands in Casco Bay depart from the piers of Commercial Street. Congress Street, where L. L. Bean operates a factory store, runs the length of the peninsular city from alongside the Western Promenade in the southwest to the Eastern Promenade on Munjoy Hill in the northeast, passing through the small downtown area.

Saint John, Canada

Like any seaport worth its salt, Saint John is a welcoming place. The natives welcomed Samuel de Champlain and Sieur de Monts when they landed here on St. John the Baptist Day in 1604. Later, British Loyalists poured off a fleet of ships to make a home amid the rocks and forests. Although most were English, there were some Irish among them. Thousands more Irish workers found their way to Saint John during the Napoleonic Wars and the potato famine. Their descendants make Saint John Canada's most Irish city. All the comings and goings over the centuries have exposed Saint Johners to a wide variety of cultures and ideas, and made it a sophisticated Maritime city. Major provincial artists such as Jack Humphrey, Miller Brittain, Fred Ross, and Herzl Kashetsky were born here. Industry and salt air have combined to give parts of this city a weather-beaten quality, but you also find restored 19th-century wooden and redbrick homes.

Halifax, Canada

Halifax is an intimate city that retains the ease of a small town. From harbor-front life to Victorian public gardens, it is large enough to have the trappings of a capital city, yet small enough that many of its sights can be seen on a pleasant walk downtown. It's on the second-largest natural harbor in the world and was once the point of entry to Canada for refugees and immigrants. The port remains a busy shipping center, with a flow of container ships and tugboats. Pleasure boats and yachts tie up alongside weathered schooners at the Historic Properties Wharf. Pubs, shops, museums, and parks welcome visitors and locals. In summer, jazz concerts and buskers, music festivals and sports events enliven the outdoor atmosphere. Art on exhibit, crafts sales, live theater, and fine food bring people here in all seasons.
