The Grand Tour Italy: The Small-Group Art & Masterpiece Touring Experience
Dear friend and fellow traveler:
The Grand Tour. Coined by Richard Lassels in his 1670 Voyage of Italy, the term "Grand Tour" came to refer to travel of Europe's elite and was ostensibly educational in character. A primary goal of the Grand Tour was Italy, where young artists, aristocrats, and statesmen came to experience first-hand the remains of classical culture. The origins of the Tour can be found in the sixteenth century, but it was at its height in the late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
QueensLander Tours is pleased to introduce our latest itinerary in our very successful Italy program, The Grand Tour Italy. While nobles came to hone their tastes by viewing the art of ancient Rome, art students from all parts of Europe also came to Italy to learn from ancient models. The art produced in Italy during the age of the Grand Tour shows close observation of the natural landscape and ancient artifacts, celebrates modern Italian customs, and commemorates the visits of wealthy patrons.
Remember Robert Browning, from the beginning of the letter? “Open my heart and you will see, engraved inside of it, ‘Italy.’” Come, if you dare, and you may just leave with a little bit of Italy etched on your soul as well.
