PORTS OF CALL
Honolulu, Hawaii
Palm Tree and in Oahu
All kinds of memorable experiences can be yours. Imagine yourself sitting in a kayak watching the brilliant colors of dawn etch themselves across the sky, sipping a mai tai while you take in sweeping views of the south shore and the Waianae Mountains, battling a magnificent game fish on a high-tech sport-fishing boat, or listening to melodic voices chant the stories of a proud people and a proud culture that was overthrown little more than a century ago. By far the most social of the islands, Oahu has some of the best shopping and most fashionable promenade strips, as well as beautiful beaches with all the classic ingredients: tall palms, white sand, gentle surf, and plenty of sunshine. Waikiki beach offers the best of both worlds. Its trendy eateries, high-end hotels, and ritzy shops collide with a stunning beachfront. Its like Rodeo Drive meets South Beach, only better.

Hilo, Hawaii
The Big Island is the largest island in the Hawaiian chain (4,028 sq. miles—about the size of Connecticut), the youngest (800,000 years), and the least populated (with 30 people per square mile), and has an unmatched diversity of terrain and climate: fiery volcanoes and sparkling waterfalls, black-lava deserts and snowcapped mountain peaks, tropical rainforests and alpine meadows, a glacial lake, and miles of golden, black, and green (!) sand beaches. A 50-mile drive will take you from snowy winter to sultry summer, passing through spring or fall along the way. The island looks like the inside of a barbecue pit on one side, and a lush jungle on the other. It’s a bizarre place, in a word, and takes some people aback because it doesn’t fit the tropical stereotype.

Kahului, Hawaii
Maui, also called the Valley Isle, is just a small dot in the vast Pacific Ocean, but it has the potential to offer visitors unforgettable experiences: floating weightless through rainbows of tropical fish, standing atop a 10,000-foot volcano watching the sunrise color the sky, listening to the raindrops in a bamboo forest, and sunning on idyllic beaches. The island is also packed with interesting cultural sites and colorful history. Here, you set foot on the spot where ancient Hawaiian royalty and priests once walked, gathered, and worshipped. Later, at the turn of the century, it became a bustling HOME to native Hawaiians, immigrants, and missionaries. Cruise ships call on two ports, Kahului and Lahaina.

Who should go
First timers to Hawaii, or those wanting a refresher course, will appreciate being able to see four unique islands and enjoy the immersion into Hawaiian life. Those ready and able to embark on a tour or trek every day will get the most out of their time, though all ages are represented on these cruises. A large portion of passengers are couples and groups in their late 40s and up, but younger honeymooners are abundant as well.

Who shouldn’t go
Seasoned cruisers who expect the crew to know what they want before they even want it will find this cruise below their standards -- the all-American crew is attentive, friendly, and efficient, but not omnipresent. Many people enjoy this laid-back relationship while others prefer a more formal boundary between passenger and crew. The full itinerary (only a half-day at sea) may be disappointing to those looking to spend lots of time lounging by the pool.
